Wheat Procurement Postponed in Punjab

Punjab has rescheduled its wheat procurement program due to increased incidence of COVID-19 infection and delayed crop ripening. The Union Food Ministry of India said that after the request of the Punjab state government, the procurement program has been kept from April 10. Wheat is a major rabi crop sown in Northern to central India during rabi"(Winter) season. 

In Punjab the crops harvesting starts from March where the grains' moment start from month of April.  The Center govt has estimated wheat procurement to grow by around  9.56 percent which around 427.36 lakh tonnes during the year. Out of this, as last year data the state govt 130 lakh tonnes purchased from Punjab.


The Union Food Ministry said in a statement- Due to increase in COVID-19 cases again in the state of Punjab government and delay in maturity of the wheat crop during the season 2021-22. State Govt had requested a reshuffle in the wheat procurement time, It was considered. ''

The central government of India has accepted the request of the Punjab state government to carry out the wheat procurement program from April 10, 2021, to May 31, 2021. Also, It was earlier to be held from April 1, 2021,  to May 25, 2021. Wheat is procured by the FCI and state civil supply agencies at the MSP level.
