National Fisheries Development Board celebrated the National Fish Farmers Day

National Fisheries Development Board celebrated National Fish Farmer's Day through virtual medium. National Fish Farmer's Day is celebrated every year across the country to show solidarity with all the fishermen, fish farmers and concerned stakeholders. This event is organized for the first time in the country on July 10, 1957 at Angul, Odisha to commemorate the contribution of Professor Dr. Hiralal Choudhary and his colleague Dr. Alikunhi in achieving success in Indust Breeding of Major Corp.

This pioneering work of induced breeding has over the years transformed the development of the fisheries sector from traditional to intensive fisheries and led to the success of the modern aquaculture industry. It was also celebrated as the foundation day of NFDB.


The Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Shri Parshottam Rupala and the Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Shri L. Murugan, Shri Jatindra Nath Swain, Secretary (Fisheries), Dr. C. Suvarna, Chief Executive, NFDB, Dr. J. Balaji, Joint Secretary (Marine Fisheries) and Shri Sagar Mehra, Joint Secretary (Inland Fisheries) and other officials of Department of Fisheries, Government of India and NFDB participated in the programme. 

In his address on the occasion, the Union Minister said that India has got the benefit of a vast coastline on three sides with a huge potential for the fisheries sector. Realizing the importance of this sector, the government has launched PMMSY. Under this scheme, financial assistance is given to fishermen/fisheries farmers for fisheries, creating infrastructure, buying seeds and feed, fishing activity as well as training for its proper implementation.


Mr. Murugan,( Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying), said that with increasing population day by day and there is a demand for nutritional security and fish is an excellent source to meet this need. He said that PMSSY scheme will definitely boost fish production and bring a change in the lives of fishermen. 

The Union Minister held discussions with the progressive fish farmers who have taken steps such as creation of new ponds, fish hatcheries, kiosks, entrepreneurs, ornamental fisheries, seed rearing and introduction of new technology like bio-floc, which will increase fish production and help the farmers. It has proved to be very helpful and environment friendly in improving profits.
