Kharif crop sowing area backward in the country

Kharif sowing has lagged behind due to lack of monsoon rains in the country. Except pulses, the area under other crops has decreased so far, total sown has been done in 1064 lakh hectares as against 1083 lakh hectares in this period last year. In this way about 19 lakh hectares less area has been sown this year. On the other hand, the monsoon is also changing in the country. Sometimes it is raining more and sometimes less. 

There is a deficit of 10 per cent monsoon rainfall in the season till August 25. Which has an effect on sowing. According to the Meteorological Department, till now there is a deficit of 11 percent in North-East India, 12 percent in North-West India and 13 percent in Central India. Whereas South India and the coastal region have received 3 per cent more rainfall.

According to the data released by the Ministry of Agriculture, so far paddy has been sown in about 388.56 lakh hectare area in the country as against 393.41 lakh hectare in the same period last year. On the other hand, sowing of pulses has increased by about 2 lakh hectares to 135.83 lakh hectares as compared to 134.23 lakh hectares till this time last year. In this, arhar has been sown in 48.94 lakh hectare, which was done in 46.98 lakh hectare so far last year. Coarse cereals have been sown in about 170.98 lakh hectares as against 173.61 lakh hectares in the corresponding period last year.

On the other hand, oilseeds have an area coverage of about 189.54 lakh hectares, which was 192.51 lakh hectares in the corresponding period last year. Soybean area has increased in this so far soyabean has been sown in 121.51 lakh hectare which was 120.56 lakh hectare last year. Similarly, so far sugarcane has been sown in 54.70 lakh hectares as against 53.96 lakh hectares during the same period last year. At the same time, cotton has been sown in 117.42 lakh hectares so far as compared to 128.41 lakh hectares in the same period last year.
