The government implements various schemes to aid farmers, providing them with assistance in different ways. One such scheme is the Prime Minister's Crop Insurance Scheme, which is being carried out by the Indian government to protect farmers from losses caused by natural disasters. Farmers across the country are rapidly connecting to avail the benefits of this scheme. In fact, during the year 2023-24, there has been a 27% increase in the number of applicants for this scheme.
The Haryana government has requested damage reports. Moreover, recent unexpected rains and hailstorms in many states across the country could further escalate these figures. In Haryana, recent rainfall and storms have devastated wheat crops, along with significant losses in mustard and vegetable crops. Among the hardest-hit are 46,000 acres across 58 villages in Sonipat and Kharkhoda. The government has instructed farmers to upload reports of their damaged crops to the portal by March 15th.
In addition, recent unseasonal rains in states like Haryana have caused substantial damage to farmers' crops. Under the Crop Insurance Scheme, farmers are required to pay approximately Rs. 500 for every Rs. 100 of coverage. Over the past eight years, claims exceeding Rs. 23.22 billion have been approved for more than 23.22 crore farmers.
The number of applicants for the PM Crop Insurance Scheme is increasing year by year. This scheme offers coverage against various natural disasters, including droughts, floods, pests, fires, cyclones, hailstorms, and unseasonal rains. The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare has released application statistics for the Prime Minister's Crop Insurance Scheme (PMFBY). According to the data, there was a 33.4% increase in farmers' applications in 2021-22 compared to the previous year, while a 41% increase was recorded in 2022-23. Moreover, as of the year 2023-24, there has been a 27% increase in the number of farmers' applications under the scheme.
This scheme covers losses incurred from natural disasters. Under the Prime Minister's Crop Insurance Scheme, losses due to natural disasters are covered for insured crops. This includes compensation for losses incurred during sowing or cutting due to drought, floods, pests, natural fire, and lightning, as well as damage due to cyclones, hailstorms, and unseasonal rains. Furthermore, after the crop is cut and left to dry in the field, it is covered by insurance for a maximum of 14 days against losses caused by cyclones, cyclonic rainfall, untimely rainfall, and hailstorms.
To apply for this scheme, farmers should visit the official website, pmfby.gov.in. Then, they should click on the "Farmer Corner" on the homepage, log in with their mobile number, provide necessary details such as name, address, age, and state, and submit their application. This completes the application process.
